In all properties, there has to be enough water quantity to satisfy the different needs of their inhabitants. Therefore, it is important that water consumption is correctly computed prior to the structure construction.

In this article, our plumbers in Singapore explain a few common types of pipes used in building construction.

1. Cast iron pipes in Singapore

Cast iron pipes and fixtures are mainly utilized by a plumber in Singapore for setting up rain water and soil disposal systems. This type of pipes is fabricated through the sand cast process or through spinning.

Sand cast pipes are fabricated through sheeting down molten cast iron in sand moulds which are mounded vertically. They have a length of 1.5, 1.8 and 2 meters and a thickness of 5 and 6 millimeters.

Spun pipes are fabricated through sheeting down molten gray cast iron into a mould which is cooled by revolving water.

These pipes have a length of maximum 3 meters with a smaller thickness than the sand cast pipes.

2. Copper pipes

Copper pipes are used by our plumbers in Singapore if the ground water is extremely corrosive to metals.

Copper has a high corrosive resistance in comparison to other materials, as well as a significant strength and an acceptable ductility.

These types of pipes can be acquired in long lengths and they can withstand high pressure, therefore they are also utilized for industrial purposes which require heavy flows.

Copper pipes can be:

Heavy gauge pipes: utilized for high pressure, such as the main pipe from a distribution main or for large flows;
Light gauge pipes: utilized for a pressure smaller than 0.15N/mm2 which is not used for internal domestic pipes.

3. The plastic or PVC pipes used by our plumbers in Singapore

The plastic or PVC pipes are a common type of pipes utilized in building construction. Plastic pipes can be:

Unplasticized PVC (UPVC) or rigid pipes, which are utilized by Singapore plumbing professionals for cold water;
Plasticized (PVC) pipes which are fabricated with the addition of rubber. They have a lower strength and working temperature than the UPVC ones;
