Basic Plumbing Tools: Pipe Wrench Image
A pipe wrench is a basic plumbing tool used by our plumbers in Singapore. This tool has an adjustable wrench or spanner utilized to turn soft iron pipes and fixtures with a circular surface.

Pipe wrenches are generally made of cast steel, however, their bodies can be also made from aluminum. The teeth, as well as the jaw kits, which are also adjustable, can be acquired to fix broken wrenches, instead of buying a new one.

Description of the pipe wrench in Singapore

Pipe wrenches are used by a plumber in Singapore to loosen and tighten threaded pipes. The top jaw of a pipe wrench can be moved up and down and the toothed jaws can be used to grip the pipe.

The pipe wrench jaws are projected so that the superior jaw, named the hook jaw, rocks slightly in the wrench frame. Therefore, when forward pressure is applied to the handle, the superior and inferior jaws become closer to each other.

Pipe wrenches have different sizes and are measured by the handle length. A 14” pipe wrench is generally fit for most plumbing jobs in a household effectuated by our plumbers in Singapore

When taking care of a job, our plumbers choose the most appropriate size wrench. If the wrench has the wrong size for the job at hand, or if a mechanical device named a “cheater” is used instead, this might overload the wrench capacity and cause the tool failure or personal injury.

Correct utilization of pipe wrenches in Singapore

After choosing the correct pipe wrench for the job, our Singapore plumbing professionals attach it to the pipe in the correct manner. No matter what the size of the pipe wrench is, the plumber will ensure he leaves space between the hook jaw shank on the pipe wrench and the pipe.

This gap enables a better gripping action on the pipe. For an appropriate turning and gripping stroke, the gap is maintained approximately 1.3 cm wide.

When the wipe wrench is gripping the pipe, our plumbers will have the pipe stay in the “V” of the hook. The pipe has to contact both sides of the “V”, so that the wrench does not slip around the pipe.
